The first yacht in a major charter fleet to feature solar panels, over thirty of the new catamarans are heading for Sunsail destinations across Asia and the Caribbean this fall and the Mediterranean next spring. Sunsail’s total fleet purchase plan for 2010 is over 140 new yachts, demonstrating confidence in customer demand and in line with Sunsail’s strategy of continued growth with an exceptional fleet.
The Sunsail 384 has been exclusively produced for Sunsail, with the design completed by performance multihull architects Morrelli and Melvin. This catamaran is a market leader, designed for high performance with a generous sail plan, yet is also highly practical and easy to sail, making it an ideal entry level catamaran.
The hull design has been carefully studied to offer a smooth ride and maximize load carrying capacity. Unlike a typical cat, the finely-tuned steering system gives exceptional feel at the helm, plus the centralized sail control system ensures simple and comfortable helming. An abundance of outdoor space capitalizes on sailing in the warm breezes of the Tropics and Mediterranean.
“The Sunsail 384 catamaran is yet another example of our commitment to investing in our high quality charter fleet. By commissioning the best designers and builders, we have been able to produce a supremely comfortable and easy to sail catamaran that places sailing performance and customer comfort at the forefront”, comments Lex Raas, Sunsail President and CEO.

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Cape Town International Boat Show gears up for show no 9 - 24 September 2009

South Africa’s premier event for it’s yachting and water sport products once again promises to be an event not to be missed. With wind and sails, the journey was certainly a green one.
Now a Swiss engineer wants to match the feat — with a catamaran called “Planet Solar,” powered entirely on the sun’s energy.

It’s a clean-tech adventure designed by Raphael Domjan to promote solar power, energy efficiency and sustainable mobility. Domjan calls it “the path towards a lasting world.”

“(I) want to show that we can change, that solutions exist and that it isn’t too late,” Domjan writes on his Web site. “Future generations are looking to us; our choices will mark the future of humanity.”

Domjan — who has been an ambulance driver, mountain guide and rescue specialist — will skipper the boat with Gerard d’Aboville, who was the first person to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

Called “Planet Solar,” the futuristic-looking no-sails catamaran is being built in Germany. Domjan and d’Aboville will launch the round-the-world attempt in 2011.

Domjan told CNN that he hopes the $11.5 million project will prove that boats can travel at high speed without emitting any carbon dioxide.

The boat’s deck will be covered in 470 square meters of solar panels. Its skippers hope to average a speed of eight knots but can push the vessel to 14 knots (15 km/hour and 25 km/hour, respectively).

The boat, in photos available online, appears to have two propellers at its stern for propulsion.

To take advantage of the most sunlight possible, the tentative route is largely around the equator. In case of bad weather, batteries on board will be able to store solar energy to power the boat for three days, according to CNN.

But if cloudy weather blocks the sun for longer, the boat will have trouble. Do you have any thoughts on a green back-up plan for the ambitious sailors?

(Writing and reporting by Laura Isensee)

Photo Credit: A 3-dimensional model of the futuristic-looking boat. Beyond the records he challenges, in a world consumed by issues of ecology, energy and food, Stowe's challenge is a studied example of self-sufficiency.

Surviving on rainwater, fresh fish, sprouted beans from stored provisions, and supplying his own energy by water and the sun while regenerating his spirit with yoga and prayer, Stowe is evidence that challenges of ecological sensitivity and survival can be met spiritually and pragmatically. The schooner contains three years of food and supplies, and provides its own energy for lights, winches, and satellite communications from solar panels and water generators driven by the forward motion of the boat. The Anne stopped receiving shore power nearly a year before her departure, and the plan is to take no resupply of any item nor to port for 1000 days.

This is his post on his website for day 684 : http://www.1000days.net/

Day 684 After Halo Storm

Voyage
Sunday, 08 March 2009
Day 684 - March 7, 2009 Wind SW, 35 knots, Course E, Speed 2 knots,
Position 34*26s by 37*22w

After Halo Storm
The weather reports I have been getting have been very helpful. I wrote my friend who set them up for me and told him I think it gusts more than what the weather report indicates. He answered, "It's possible the gusts are 30 to 50 per cent higher than the wind averages". That means during the 50-knot storm I just had some gusts could go up to 75 knots.I am glad I didn't know that before - I was feeling lucky - now I know I was getting blasted harder than I thought. The last two storms have been out of the NE, which is right from the direction I want to go. When the wind starts to really blow, I don't want to risk my sails, so I take them down. With the wind dead against me, I go "bare poles". Then I drift sideways, backwards with the wind and waves. The schooner rolls a lot and it's rough, but the ride is not too bad and I don't damage anything. Last night during the worst part of the storm, the big moon peeked out through some holes in the clouds and lit up the waves. The clouds around the moon flashed with bright electricity, but there were no lightening bolts. Today the wind moved around to the SW and I put up the storm staysail and we started heading ENE again.

Jesus and Buddha continue to massage my arms. Their hands are soft and slim, but strong. I feel the healing when they dig deeply into a cramped muscle. I feel their fingers follow it and if I keep paying attention, they work the cramp out of the muscle. They are as big as the sky. Their hands touch me, and from the highest heights they look down lovingly.

Yacht Management

Aegir Yacht Management

Personal leisure time is limited in this day and age and the last thing you want to do is spend those precious moments scrubbing or repairing when you could be sailing and enjoying. Based in the beautiful coastal city of Cape Town, the Academy offers career sail training and power training for the international yachting and super yachting industries.
They offer a well balanced training program, alternating offshore practical modules with shore-based theory modules in our excellent private accommodation and theory base, the Ocean House.
Their sail training methods are progressive and thorough as our aim is to expose our students to the many aspects of sailing including heavy weather and advanced offshore survival techniques. Challenging cruises such as rounding the famous Cape Point (where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans “meet”) and Cape Agulhas, the southern most tip of Africa, regularly fall within the RYA sail training programs.

ROBBIE DOVE, the principal of the sailing school is one of the country’s most highly respected racing/cruising yachtsmen and instructors. He holds the local SAS and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean/Instructor certificates and was appointed as an RYA Examiner for Power and Sail in 2003. He is also an Examiner for the local sailing body in South Africa (SAS). Robbie’s wealth of knowledge and expertise in racing and cruising is visible in our sail training standards and excellent student success rate.

Their contact info :

Ground Floor

Marina Centre

West Quay Road

V&A Waterfront

Cape Town

Tel: 021 425 7837

Fax: 021 421 8841

http://www.oceansailing.co.za/

Cape Grace in V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

The Maverick 400 Catamaran (Catlyn) was introduced to the South African Marine Industry with a private function at the Marina in front of the Cape Grace Hotel, the 26 and 27th February 2009. When I bought an EPIRB for the yacht CATLYN I could experience the powerful use of online buying versus the normal personal physical buying at a business.

You DO NOT need personal physical service anymore or let me qualify "always". Internet with visual ads and the quick click to the specs with photos without an unfriendly salesman or aura that says "Who the hell are you ?" are starting to become the norm. You also do not need to fight the traffic, crime and unprofessional assistants anymore. You can within a few minutes compare prices, products and make a decision.

I first tried with personal contact via a company called GMS in Cape Town - it was no good ! Then I type in EPIRB on the Internet. Within 10 minutes I have bought an EPIRB through iWarehouse.co.za and a friendly telephone guy named John Guthrie helped me, he even did the registration of the EPIRB for free. Price ? ... the best. Click on the EPIRB heading and it will take you directly to the web of iWarehouse.co.za

What a pleasure !!!

Thanks John.

Important Note :

From 1 February 2009, 121.5 MHz distress beacons are no longer detected by satellite – you must switch to a 406 MHz distress beacon as soon as possible.
